Turkey’s Independent Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association MUSIAD USA has become first Turkish NGO to be on the consultative list of UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The UN congratulated MUSIAD USA in a statement, saying it was granted “special consultative status”.
The decision was taken by the NGO Committee of ECOSOC at a recent annual meeting regarding granting consultancy status to NGOs.
The decision would allow MUSIAD USA “to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, funds and agencies in a number of ways,” the UN statement read.
ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the UN that coordinates on economic and social fields of the organization.
For his part, Mustafa Tuncer, head of MUSIAD USA, lauded the decision, stating that the NGO with its granted status makes it “an active role player” in increasing international trade volume of Turkey.
MUSIAD USA will also be able to deliver Turkey’s views in a right way in the UN, Tuncer asserted.
MUSIAD USA operates under the umbrella of the MUSIAD, which is a non-political, non-profit businessmen association based in Turkey.
